Leading with Heart and Humility: Earl Kauffman Honored with the Pinnacle Award

In the halls of Riverview Junior High, Earl Kauffman is known as the "calm in the storm." Whether navigating the complexities of school leadership or coaching on the football field, Earl has spent more than two decades proving that a school’s success is built on the strength of its relationships. As the 2026 Pinnacle Award recipient, Earl embodies the theme "Together We’re Unlimited" through his steadfast commitment to seeing the best in every student and staff member.
Earl’s path to the principal's office was anything but traditional. A former BYU football scholarship athlete, he began his career working with troubled youth in the court system and state corrections. It was a professor’s nudge that eventually led him to education—a transition that brought his unique brand of "champion-first" leadership to Murray. Over 22 years at Riverview, he has served as a counselor, assistant principal, and finally, as the principal for the last seven years.
His leadership is defined by a rare balance of wisdom and humility. During a particularly challenging period where he effectively carried the responsibilities of two administrative roles, Earl led without complaint. "He led with consistent integrity, fairness, and genuine care for others," his nominators noted. "He modeled calm, steady leadership even in difficult circumstances."
Earl’s impact is most visible in his ability to turn adversaries into partners. He is famous for his "open-door" policy and his patience with frustrated parents, often spending hours in meetings until they realize he is their greatest ally in their child's success. From the custodians and kitchen staff to the first-year teachers, Earl ensures everyone feels valued, supported, and encouraged to do their best work.
We are proud to honor a leader who prioritizes human connection alongside academic excellence.
