The Heart of Viewmont: Vangee Watts Honored with the Pinnacle Award

In the first-grade classrooms of Viewmont Elementary, "yet" is a powerful word. It is the cornerstone of the growth mindset that Vangee Watts has spent fifteen years instilling in her students—the belief that even the most difficult challenges can be overcome with persistence and support. As a 2026 Pinnacle Award recipient, Vangee’s life and career serve as a profound example of this year’s theme, "Together We’re Unlimited."
Vangee’s connection to Murray runs deep. A graduate of Murray High School, she returned to the community to raise her family and eventually to lead her own classroom. Known for a "heart and soul" approach to teaching, she is often the last car in the parking lot, staying late to ensure every lesson is engaging and every student feels seen. From "brain breaks" to making math enjoyable, she creates an environment where learning truly comes alive.
Her dedication was never more evident than during this past school year. Following the passing of her husband, Vangee demonstrated a level of resilience that moved the entire Viewmont community. Even on the most difficult days, she prioritized her students’ stability, ensuring their schedules remained undisrupted and even checking in on their progress while away. As she often tells her students, she leaned into her own "growth mindset" mantras, finding strength in the very community she has spent years building.
Colleagues and Para-Educators describe Vangee as a leader who leads with "kindness and a commanding presence." Whether she is offering a snack to the evening sweepers or mentoring her team with humor and ease, she ensures that everyone around her feels supported. As one nomination noted, "She doesn't just show up for the school day; she shows up for life—attending her students' outside events and night activities to cheer them on."
We are incredibly proud to celebrate Vangee’s legacy of love and resilience.
